I sign my paintings with my initials, D.A.B. , which takes up much less space at the bottom of the canvas than my full name, Dominique Alodia Bolish. I am a freelance artist and yoga teacher currently living in the Denver Metro Area. Although the majority of my work is primarily painted on canvas, I also create large scale public and commercial murals. I moved to Denver in 2009 to pursue my artistic passion in an inspiring urban community while also having the ability to immerse myself in the vast beauty of the mountains within minutes. Through the content of my work, my desire is to bring awareness to our deep and necessary connection with nature.
My love for nature began as a small child, born and raised living in the woods of the beautiful Appalachian Mountains in Southwestern Pennsylvania. The thick canopy of forest and clear mountain creek that flowed behind our house were my playground. I would sit for hours by the creek and sketch the dogwoods and rhododendron, the water, and even the wildlife when I could catch it. As I grew older, my subject matter evolved to people, portraits, and figurative art.
In 2000, I attended college for Fine Art at the Corcoran College of Art and Design in Washington D.C. , and in 2009 at the Rocky Mountain College of Art and Design in Lakewood, CO. There, I learned to tell a story through a visual language of design, color, composition, and texture. As a painter, the breadth of my work speaks to the innate and spiritual relationship between humanity and the natural world. It often incorporates spiritual, philosophical, or emotional themes represented with symbolism of nature and the human body. I believe that within the fast-paced and technologically-advanced age in which we live, the importance of this relationship is being lost. Nature brings us back to our center; it brings balance to our being on mental, physical and spiritual level. On an intuitive level, it reminds us of who we are.
Painting is a intimate and explorative process for me. It is my outlet to process, understand, and move through thoughts, emotions and personal experiences on canvas. Through bringing each creation to life, I discover the purpose of each piece. I often have visions of my paintings, and as I paint the imagery evolves and the meaning of the painting begins to reveal itself. Through this intuitive process, I grow, heal, and gain wisdom about myself and life.
I am drawn to the genres of Magic Realism and Surrealism, however, I am inspired by many different artists for a variety of reasons. I am inspired by the courage and vulnerability of Surrealist Artist, Frida Kahlo; the message of impermanence, beauty, and transformation by environmentalist and sculptor, Andy Goldsworthy; the whimsical landscapes and brilliant color of Illustrator, Maxfield Parrish; the sleek, mid-century modern designs of Frank LLoyd Wright juxtiposed with natural elements;along with many others. Although my inspiration comes from people and places, naturalists, colorists, and figurative artists tend to be at the top of my list. Over the years, I have experimented with Abstract Expressionism, Realism, Impressionism, Surrealism, and others. However my painting evolves over time, the thoughts, emotions, and experiences of human life symbolized by our relationship to nature are present.
